Bay Area Organic Produce Delivery!

Today, I received my first delivery from Farm Fresh To You (FFTY). FFTY is a local organic family farm delivering fruits and vegetables direct to your door. For $29 (which includes delivery), I signed up for the 'regular' box which contains mostly vegetables with a bit of fruit. They provide many options and are flexible in customizing what shows up in your box (i.e. I never want peas, but always send onions).

I anxiously awaited my delivery today and practically pounced on the unsuspecting delivery guy. He didn't realize who he was dealing with when he walked up to my door ... I find it hard to contain my excitement for such things.

I don't think I would be able to purchase the same goods at Whole Foods for much less than $29 -- the value seems legit. I also feel better about supporting a local farm and appreciate that my items came from nearby (i.e. and are much fresher because of it).

This week, my box included:

1/2 lb. baby spinach
1/2 lb. baby lettuce
1/4 lb. pistachio meats
1 bunch carrots
1 bunch cilantro
3/4 lb. sugar snap peas
1 lb. asparagus
1/2 lb. mushrooms
1 yellow onion
1 1/2 lbs cameo apples

I started by nibbling on a sweet carrot then moved on to a crisp and juicy apple. Everything is fresh and very clean - they obviously place attention of delivering fully washed produce, which I appreciate.

Although I signed up for delivery every other week, I think I will now update to weekly. I like the assortment and being at the mercy of cooking what I am given :-)

If anyone locally is interested in signing up, please let me know. If you note me as your referrer, I get a free box of produce (and you know how much that would thrill me).

Does anyone have any suggested recipes for asparagus or carrots? I feel like I always do the same old thing with them and need some fresh ideas.

Tomorrow, I plan to try and hunt down farm fresh eggs. Erin wrote about her grandmother's farm raised eggs the other day and now it's stuck in my head. I don't think I've had a good egg since I moved away from our farm.

Oh.. So that's the blood-curdling scream heard throughout California today... Kidding! (Peace, Allen! :)

You forgot to say that you never want oranges! Could think of a few nice things for peas, though :) I hope they can keep up the good variety. Nice find, Allen!

We signed up for CSA (community supported agriculture) for the first time this year too. I guess we now have half a share in a farm in Wisconsin. We won't get our first box until May but I just found out they'll also be giving us herbs to plant in the garden, I'm so excited. We also only did every other week, I was worried it would be too much every week for two.

I think this represents great value Allen. I'm very envious and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I like asparagus grilled with olive oil and salt sprinkled on top.

Well, I know I'm looking forward to the asparagus coming up here so I can make that Asparagus salad you took such a great picture of. And carrots, the last couple of times I've had them I've gingered them...cook'em in a bit of water and either pieces of fresh ginger or ginger juice until soft and the water has evaporated, then add a touch of butter. Serious YUM!

Oooo, I can't find the "recipe" but I roasted some asparagus with olive oil and rosemary branches a couple of years ago. The rosemary gets place in the bottom of a grill-proof pan and the oil covered spears on top of it. Place it all on a hot grill. You have to turn the spears every 1-2 minutes to get them brown but not burnt. It was literally pouring down rain the day I made it and no one was willing to hold the umbrella as I turned the spears, but it was well worth the effort. Amazing how much of the rosemary essense got passed on!

I'm totally interested. Can I just buy one as a sort of evaluation?

I am so sick of the sugar snap peas. They've been in every single one of my deliveries so far from Boston Organics. I have no idea what to do with them and I can't find them on the "do not send form" to get them off my list. It's amusing in a sad, annoyed way.

You get way cooler boxes though than I do! We get these big green reusable tubs. They look like the packing boxes we used to use to move our offices between floors.

If you get another shipment of asparagus, you can try my recipe for Vietnamese crab, asparagus egg drop soup. I just haven't gotten around to posting it up yet. Hence, the next shipment. :P

I try to cook in season with whatever I find at the farmers' market. Even when I go rather crazy and splurge on stuff, I rarely spend more than $10 max.

What a cool service! I am with the very proletariat Terra Firma Farm in Winters and I have to drive to the next town to pick it up... hmmm, in regards to sustainability, many cars driving to the pickup spot versus one truck driving to many spots to deliver... Also, nice that you can specify what you like and don't like. Jeez, maybe I should check these guys out.

We are so alike! I get an organic box delivered too and it's like having a birthday every week! I love the challenge of mystery ingredients...

To answer your asparagus question - I've got a lovely poached salmon salad on my site which makes good use of fresh asparagus.

that is such a great way to get your produce, and it is fun to think of things to cook on the fly with whatever you get. i belonged to a CSA program in brooklyn for awhile, and i really wish i could find something like that here in sydney, but i don't think it exists.
