Life has a funny way of kicking you right between the legs just when you least expect it. The past two weeks have had a few ups and downs, with a doctor's appointment this week which has changed a few priorities. I rather dislike change, especially when it requires sacrifice of things I greatly adore.
Two weeks ago I was required to attain a medical physical for my immigration paperwork. The doctor performs the physicals for Canadian immigration and was not my primary physician. He discovered my blood pressure seemed a bit high and suggested I have it checked out by my own doctor.
Last week, I visited my doctor and fortunately my blood pressure was a bit lower and within the higher end of the 'normal' range. I breathed a sigh of relief and gave a blood sample for testing. I returned this week to complete my physical and receive the blood work results.
I saw the puzzled look of my doctor as she entered the room. She pulled up a chair so we could both review the paper she held. Since my last physical (about 2 years ago) it seems my bad cholesterol has significantly increased ... *significantly*. And inversely, my good cholesterol decreased. She gave me the choice of trying to reduce it via diet and exercise over the next 6 months or take medication for the rest of my life. I've opted for the 6 month period of massive physical and dietary improvements.
Now what? My first thought was this blog and whether I could continue it, hence my sporadic posting lately. There isn't much to write when only eating fresh fruit, salad and limited amounts of protein. I'll admit that I'm not feeling too inspired just yet. For breakfast I had plain oatmeal (i.e. no milk, no sugar, no salt) with a bit of cinnamon. For lunch it was fat-free cottage cheese, half a cucumber sandwich on high fiber bread, and a handful of strawberries.
So, I've written down my priorities to help myself stay focused. Formerly, I cooked like crazy and ate too many bad things -- it was only last week that a delightful triple cream brie passed my lips. With reluctance and fear, I am changing my priorities and will focus lowering my cholesterol. I've already stopped eating my daily dose of white rice and haven't used a single grain of salt this week. Although I have wickedly bad will power, I know I can overcome this. However, my blog content may suffer and will likely appeal less to most of you.
The bright side is that I'll be more slim and trim due to the change in diet, although I'm not rushing to buy a speedo just yet. And once I overcome this cholesterol thing I can move on to my next priority -- attaining a super power. As a kid, I used to run around pretending I could shoot fire from my fingertips. With a little determination, I know I can achieve it too :-) Criminals of the world, beware!

Allen, it's good that you're aware of it and I think you can still eat everything in moderation but first off...less of the cakes, muffins & sweets...opt for fruits and some hearty salads. You'll have lots to blog about!
First off, take care of your health and it seems you're going in the right direction. Don't worry so much about the blogging...I'm a "sporadic" blogger, so keep yuor priorities in tune (which you clearly have stated). While I'm not a fan of "diets" i.e. South beach etc...you can actually get quite creative with the produce around you and make it healthy. I wish you all the best Allen...hmmm..do you watch the show "heroes"...I love it!
Peter M: The hardest part is giving up baked goods ... they are my life -- well, they *were* my life :-)
Peter G: I watched the first season of Heroes and liked it quite a bit. My real inspiration though is little Drew Barrymore in 'Firestarter' ... the ability to throw fire/flames is so cool ... but then, I guess I'd be called a flamer ;-)
Hey, that's not so bad! Plain oatmeal with just a pinch of cin.. urk... BLEARGHHH!! Sorry, I can't do it.
Kidding! I wasn't trying to discourage you, just making you laugh :) (on that note, do forgive me if I seem more upbeat than usual.) I think it's important to keep variety in your diet so you don't start to feel depressed. I would recommend Jamie at Home (the book) but it still has a bit of meat dishes in.. You might want to rip them out and shred them to avoid temptation when you have a sudden burst of willpower. You might also consider a gym membership if you don't already have one.
I don't mind if it makes you visit my blog any less, I'll keep coming here and writing you (you know, for virtual slaps on the wrist, kidding): healthy can still be interesting, and your blog will always be one of my faves, no matter what :)
If you were a firestarter, you could make plenty of grilled vegetables. I need to eat healthier too. So hopefully, you'll figure out some ways for the rest of us to eat well and lower our cholesterol?
Allen, Now that you know, you can deal with it - and be around to blog a whole lot longer! There is lots of great healthy food to blog about. This is a way to discover them and maybe help others in this situation.
Allen, health is very important! Take care of yourself. Great that you are turning to a healthy diet:) I wish somebody told me (or forced) me to start eating less soon. I think you can still create wonders with whatever you are allowed to eat and surprise us, the foodies. Oh, how about you start a THINK HEALTH event on your blog?:) You can just sit and relax and the recipes will flow to you from other blogs:)
Hey, glad you're getting sorted and that it was "caught" before it was real bad.
It's funny how blogging becomes a priority, but keep your health as THE priority. Plus there's bound to be plenty of healthy weight loss meals you could blog about too.... you may just find your readership increase with people searching for tasty, healthy meals for dieting.
You can still eat healthy food that is delicious but Im sure you know that already. With the baking, it's just going to have to be a little of what you fancy. You will get used to it in the end, I've done it myself. Also, exercise is a massive factor in reducing cholesterol. I know someone who just started walking more and found a significant drop. Get some cardio in! I am really into skipping, it's just a case of finding what works for you. Good luck with everything and please, please don't stop blogging!
What the others have said, we've been trying to eat healthier as well (despite all the other side bakes) and I too 'wonder or more likely worry' I could possibly bore my readers but you know what, I'm enjoying more of the healthier recipes and there are some wonderful healthy blogs out there filled with inspiration! Looking forward to reading all about your healthy and tasty recipes.
Change is hard! But I think you are going to find you can be even more creative with food than you were. I will admit whenever your post included dessert, which seemed to crop up very frequently, I deleted it. I too have to watch what I eat. Although I enjoyed your patter I did not cook your stuff. I have to watch sugar, sod., and fat as well as keeping carbo's in check...not easy to adapt to when one has been loving dessert...sigh...me too! Look at Weight Watchers online for lots of recipes and helpful articles, free, without a subscription to WW.
I love oatmeal. IMHO the best is 365 from Whole Foods, original Quaker isn't bad and both cook in 2.30 or 3 minutes in the microwave. Avoid the ugly instant kind. Cook and then add fresh fruit, a few raisins or cran raisins for sweetness,or splenda if you need more sweetness and add a tablespoon or two of non fat cream stirred in. Oh yum...I need to go have some!
Be careful not to get too much sugar in replacing the taste of fat...look at honey, splenda, unsweetened organic natural applesauce or make it yourself, and I have just recently found agave...which I like very much as I can't taste it.
Go looking for food blogs that suit your new needs...back to Heidi at 101 cookbooks.
I also went through a period of opening cupboards and the fridge and just going blank, not knowing what to eat. I think it's called the mourning stage! With a little dose of denial. It get's better!
Clean out those cupboards and then replace the 'bad' food with 'good' food. It really helps to, at least for awhile, pre-package snacks/meals so you won't be tempted to grab the wrong stuff when you are tired. That's my biggest problem.
Good luck...honestly there are lots of interesting foods and combo's out there, start looking around, hang out in the cookbook section at your local bookstore.
There are a lot of 'good' fats also...look on www.wholefoods.com and find their oils chart. I have switched to avocado oil, it takes high heat, is actually good for you and doesn't impart any strong flavor to food, a problem for me with most olive oil.
Get educated and you will start to enjoy your food again. You may find you just can't post until you get your head and your body together and get through that 'mourning' period. I was stalled for quite a while until I managed to get through the fog and find the way. You may find that we would love to join you on your exploratory ride...it could help a lot of people, change the focus of your blog as you change! I, for one, would get much more out of that than I did the yummy dessert recipes I had to delete. :) Truly, It gets better and you will feel so much better! Life will be even more interesting this time around!
Allen - It must be tough to pass on all the goodies, but I can see you have your priorities right already, so no fear.
As everyone has mentioned, you can easily have fun with your diet and whip up some cool healthy food. No need to despair. I think its a great time to start an event - maybe a no-sugar, no-butter, no-oil event - you'll be surprised at how many entries you get. :) :)
here's a great list from epicurious for low cholesterol, low fat foods - everything sounds delicious!

Allen, there's a lot of information on this post. First, really Canada? WHY!? No offense Peter and Val :-p
I am also sorry for the bad news on your cholesterol, but salads, fruits and healthy food don't have to be boring. I am learning that because I need to lose 10 more pounds (I've lost 5 already) before speedo season. Hehehe.
So hang in there buddy and think that you are lucky because you have a doctor who found out about your problem so you can live a healthier life ;)
Don't stop blogging just because of the change in diet! I also recently found out that I needed to lower my cholesterol (even though i'm already a vegetarian!)
I've been struggling to figure out healthy - but still tasty and interesting - foods to eat, while at the same time being health conscious.
Reading the ingredient lists when shopping is a real shocker! Trying to buy things without added sugar or salt is nearly impossible!
I greatly look forward to hear about your triumphs! We can all learn from your experiences.
Good for you, Allen, for actually listening to those health professionals. So many people hear those words and do nothing about it. You are creative in the kitchen, so you will adapt probably better than most. Good luck to you!
Manggy: Thanks for the tip on Jamie's book -- I've been watching the TV series and think it would be a good book to pick-up. I wish I could say that I've used my gym membership as I should ... I just hate going to sweat alongside all those other people. Haven't I mentioned that I'm an introvert? I do plan to go tomorrow and start the weekend off on a good foot.
Wandering Chopsticks: Haha! I hadn't thought how my super power could assist with cooking -- great point!
StickyGooeyCreamyChewy: Thank you -- my goal for the weekend is to find a few healthy food focused blogs to add to my reading list. :-)
Farida: Thank you! I once particpated in a Heart Healthy blog event that I think is still being held. I'll dig it up this weekend as I'm sure there will be lots of inspiration there.
Ruth: It is funny how my blog was one of my top priorities, but reality helped put it into focus. You're right though -- healthy cook will just bring about a different set of folks interested in the same thing.
Helen: Thank you! I've started walking each day and will head back to the gym starting this weekend.
Pixie: Thank you! I promise more healthy recipes are on the way.
Elizaduckie: Thank you! I started cleaning out my cupboards today -- it made me sad, but oh well.
Arundathi: Thank you so much for pointing out a great resource -- I'll definetly check it out!
Ben: Ha! Yes, Vancouver bound some day. Joe is from Vancouver and we've talked about moving there for awhile (to get out of Silicon Valley). I love Vancouver -- it's so beautiful and those Canadians are a genuine and kind people, so it makes it that much better. The immigration process will likely take the rest of this year, so no departure any time soon.
Nikkimay: I look forward to sharing ideas with you on how we can both lower our cholesterol. My first step was to replace all of the oils/butters, dairy, and condiments (i.e. soy sauce) with low-fat/low-salt versions. I love carbs, so also replaced my bread with a high-fiber whole-wheat version. I've loaded up on fresh fruits and veggies, now I just need to get into an exercise routine!
Toontz: Thank you for your support!
Keep posting as you can Allen! I know I could use more heart-healthy, improve my cholesterol numbers recipes!
Allen, please keep posting as I think we all need to learn how to eat healthier & eat well. My husband has high cholesterol at only 27 & we need good recipes for good foods. Our first start with a lot of other folks was steel cut oatmeal every morning. Other than that everything in moderation & we still eat what we love. When I make a sweet like cupcakes I make only 4 so we don't eat too many & too often. In a year we have gotten him off the med which is a good thing
Your new produce delivery should be an inspiration to you too!
You can do this! Portion control, fresh produce, you already know about that. In a selfish way it is worth it for those of us reading your blog and wanting to keep you around! Who knows...you might find that is your super power after all :)
I recently received a similar sustenance sentence from my doctor (protein, veg and a wee bit of fruit). I only lasted a week! Your dedication is inspiring. I can't wait to see all the healthful goodies that you come up with. :)
Hi Allen, just catching up on your blog...I quickly read all the other comments, there's some good advice in them. The only thing I can think to add is Moderation. The problem with any "diet" is usually depriving yourself completely of certain foods. If you are aware of what you are eating, portion size, and don't eat "bad" stuff every day, you should be okay. That said, I hope you'll continue blogging even when you move to Canada (those spring rolls look fantastic!) and take care of yourself!
P.S. one of my Bad Girls, Miss Niss, has some healthy recipes on our blog if you're interested~
