‘Simply Steamy’ Seattle

My fingers are back once again, clicking furiously away at the keyboard as if possessed, eager to give a brief re-cap of my experience at the International Food Blog Conference. While I’m sure many of you have seen the tweets and heard about the now infamous ‘goody bag’, I’m not sure if it truly conveys the single most exciting thing about the event – the ability to meet other people who are as interested in food as I am.

This was my first time meeting a group of food bloggers in person. As I watched people filter out of the hotel on that first night, faces emerged that seemed familiar. Suddenly, my mind froze and the realization that I remember people by their blog names (and not their real names). It’s embarrassing to go up to someone and ask, “Are you Sticky, Gooey, Creamy, Chewy?” … but I did it anyway.

Within minutes, I was surrounded by Pinch My Salt, Sticky, Gooey, Creamy, Chewy, Cooking with Amy, Recipe Girl, The Daily Spud, The Well-Tempered Chocolatier, Wild Yeast, Plumpest Peach, and Simply … Gluten Free. And, later in the night I also met Hedonia and Orangette.

Throughout the weekend, I continued to meet both new and veteran bloggers, so many wonderful people who I’d never heard of before. Sadly, I was ill-prepared and without a single business card to hand out (note to self: order business cards).

Although I can be quiet and well-mannered, I do have the ability to make lasting impressions so maybe the business cards weren’t entirely necessary after all. From the photo above, you’ll see one of my favorite moments — a brief encounter with Jaden (SteamyKitchen.com) and Elise (SimplyRecipes.com). All I can say is that it was late at night and at my request, these two wonderfully lovely women gave me an excellent photo-opp in bed.

I miss everyone already and look forward to meeting again. I’m still updating my Twitter account to make sure I’m following everyone but should have that done by tomorrow. It was a pleasure meeting you all!

If you are a food blogger and would like to attend a conference, BlogHer recently announced BlogHer Food ‘09 which will be later this year in San Francisco. I’m registered for it and will come prepared with business cards! (but still open to jumping into bed for photos!)

And now, a few thank-yous are in order:

THANK YOU to Foodista!
The thoughtfulness and attention to details were evident and I appreciate the experience you created for us. I hope you’ve all been able to catch up on your sleep now that the conference is over. I cannot imagine all of the effort you must have expended to make this event happen. You rock!

THANK YOU to all of the speakers!
Thank you for taking the time to share you thoughts and insights on this wonderful thing called ‘food blogging’.

THANK YOU to all of the sponsors & partners!
From the Sur la table 20+lb goody bag filled with every imaginable kitchen gadget (and, oh yes, that 8″ Shun chef’s knife) to the daily treats left at our seats, the gifts were obscene and truly amazing.

The food and drink throughout the event constantly surprised and impressed. I don’t want to single out any one restaurant or purveyor since each one made an outstanding effort to share with us their specialties: Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar, Bakery Nouveau, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, On Safari Foods, Taylor Shellfish Farms, Boom Noodle, Spring Hill Restaurant & Bar, The Herbfarm, Six Seven, Seattle Caviar Company, BOKA, Dry Soda, Northstar, Black Sheep Creamery, Mt. Townsend Creamery, Estrella Family Creamery, Willapa Hills Farmstead Cheese, and Theo Chocolate.

Yes, I did receive free food and gifts from many of the sponsors listed here, so I am overwhelmingly biased. Regardless of whether I enjoyed their products or not, I truly appreciate them seeing the value in sharing their talents with the food blog world.

And although they didn’t provide food, they fed us through knowledge and experience: Andrews McMeel Publishing, Words & Wine, and Kim Ricketts Book Events.

Looks like you had entirely too much fun! I so wish I could have joined you! Will you be at the Blogher convention in SF in September?

3 Rachel May 19, 2009 at 10:54 am

It was SO great to meet you, Allen! And you’re right; you do make a lasting impression without a business card. You certainly have a lovely site that’ll be visiting often. Cheers!

Mm-hmm, are you trying to sweeten the deal so I’ll sign up for BlogHer? ;) lol. (I’ve been thinking of ways to say that without sounding like a massive porn star.) See, you *are* so much the social butterfly you once told me you wished you could be. I’m glad you had a great time, and maybe soon you’ll be the one giving the talks! :)

Maria: Great! I will see you in SF :-)

Manggy: I don’t think I’ve reached social butterfly status yet … but I’m working on it. I’m meeting up with two local bloggers this week.

We forgive you for not having business cards, especially now that you’ve posted this picture!

7 Stephanie May 19, 2009 at 11:16 am

::swoon::: Color me jealous. I now wish I had a food blog.

Oh well. I’ll live vicariously through you, ha.

Oh my god, that photo is priceless! Was so great to meet you in person and you’re right, business cards or not, you certainly made a memorable impression! By the way, I’m totally going to steal all the links from your blog post when I finally get around to writing my own! :-)

LOL…what a hilarious photo, a good synopsis of the conference and confirmation that foodies are the best!

10 Kristen May 19, 2009 at 12:25 pm

When you told me about this I was imagining ‘under the sheets’ LOL

I guess there is always the BlogHer Food for more ;-)

Great rundown of events, it was sooo cool to meet everyone! I will remember you even without business cards, the pic above will help!!!

I AM SO BUMMED THAT I MISSED THIS! I made arrangements for someone to take over my class, and by the time that was straightened out the conference was sold out! I put myself on the waiting list, but it was not to be. Sigh.

Ignore part of the email I just sent to you. Love the incriminating photo. Of course we both know that after Blogher in September that image is going to absolutely be of the two of us double-fisting martinis!

13 nicole May 19, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Great to meet you if briefly! And that’s a super cute photo opp.

14 Carrie Oliver May 19, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Allen,

So THAT’S what went on in that room after I left! Guess you & Steamy Kitchen & Simply Recipes drank a little more of that amazing Sake?

It was lovely to meet you at the conference and here’s hoping we meet again soon.

15 Lori @ RecipeGirl May 19, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Allen! How funny you are :) I must have missed that night. It was so great to meet you at IFBC. We sure had a great time, didn’t we?

16 Peter G May 19, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Goodie bags, photo ops…oooh! It all sounds like fun Allen! Glad to see you were able to connect with the food blogging community…I wish I could have been there!

17 Mark Boxshus May 19, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I’m very jealous. You had my two favorite blogger girls in bed with you! WOW!

Any chance there might be an East Coast Conference in the works?

I’d love to get involved and help out. I’ve been so busy doing charity work that my blogging participation has suffered tremendously, so I’d love to really get involved in a big way. Any ideas, suggestions, participants? Let me know. We can do it here as well, and Elise and Jaden must be included as well!………Mark

18 Culinary Cory May 19, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Sounds like you had a blast. The photo is just too cute. Great synopsis of the conference.

21 White On Rice Couple May 19, 2009 at 9:19 pm

How Fun! Three of my favorite bloggers all in one bed. I wanna join in too! Make some room for me next time…
Thanks for the great read and recap, I felt like I was there.

22 Daily Spud May 19, 2009 at 11:06 pm

That is such a great photo – and I love the ‘Simply Steamy’ title – though perhaps it should have read ‘Simply Loud and Steamy’:)

It was really great to meet you this weekend and share a first-time oyster experience with you too! Have fun at BlogHer – I’ll be wishing I was there…

23 Plumpest Peach May 20, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I was wondering where I had stashed your biz card! No matter, it was great to meet you and discover your blog, it’s fantastic and I really enjoy your voice, doesn’t sound like you have to ‘find it.’ Haha. Hope your last night in Seattle was a good one! Cheers.

24 Kalyn May 20, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Love the photos! Sounds like you had a great time.

25 Susan/Wild Yeast May 20, 2009 at 8:59 pm

It was great meeting you! Sorry I didn’t get that photo op with you but maybe at BlogHer? :)

26 billy@ATFT May 21, 2009 at 9:13 pm

So envy that you guys have a big foodblogger conference in US. Looks like heaps of fun!

27 Hélène May 25, 2009 at 11:16 am

I followed the event online. I could not get tickets and I’m living so close. I wanted the goodie bag so bad.

28 Giff May 27, 2009 at 9:06 am

sounds like you had a blast :)
