Save Money: Buy Replacement Pyrex Lids or Covers

We use Pyrex products religiously in our household, from measuring cups to storage containers. I love the durability and ease of use the glassware provides. However, only recently did we notice a sudden breakdown in the plastic lids used on our Pyrex storage containers. Instead of buying a whole new set (actually, we have a couple sets), I decided to locate replacement lids online for the Pyrex containers.

Although finding the replacement covers you need can be difficult, it’s not impossible. And, for only $2 per replacement lid, it’s economical and less expensive than replacing an entire set of Pyrex containers.

I’m not sure how long we’ve had these containers, likely around 10 years. We use them daily, from fridge to freezer, to microwave, to dishwasher, the storage containers have been put through a heavy-use cycle for all of their lives. So, I wasn’t too surprised when the lids suddenly start to crumble.

And, I do mean crumble. The lids just started to disintegrate. Pieces of the lids chipped away opening or closing the containers. When attempting to ‘burp’ the lid, the lids would crack or the entire center of the lid would cave in and split apart from the outer edge.

So over the past few weeks, I’ve been throwing the lids away as they would break. When we were missing half of our lids, I decided that something had to be done.

Buy Replacement Pyrex Lids/Covers Online

I searched the web and discovered the Pyrex site does sell replacement lids through its online store, but they make the replacements *difficult* to find. Seriously difficult. The replacement covers are not listed in the product browse menu and are not easy to keyword search either. I found that if I selected a primary storage product, the replacement lid would sometimes be listed as a ‘see also’ product.

If I searched “blue plastic cover”, I was able to find most of what I needed. Through poking around I was able to find everything I needed. It’s not a foolproof system though. For example, if I search for “white plastic cover” I only get a few results even though there are many while plastic cover replacement lids available for purchase. Be persistent.

Here are some direct links to get you started on your replacement cover hunt:

I ended up ordering 12 replacement covers in total which arrived quickly. The lids run around $2 each plus the cost of shipping. I figured it still ended up being cheaper than replacing my several sets of Pyrex. The glassware is in perfect condition so it also wouldn’t make sense to discard the sets if I could easily replace the lids.

I don’t know why companies make it hard for the consumer to find things like that. In the end they’re still making money off of the replacement part and they’re boosting their company perception with the customer. It’s a win-win in my book!
